What Is The Life Of A Pediatric Surgeon Like?

When our child has to undergo a surgery, no matter whether it is even the smallest one, we feel so much anxiety and stressed out just worrying about whether it would be a success or not, and whether there would be any side-effects after that. It is absolutely normal for one to feel that way. But, have you ever wondered what it is like being on the other side of the knife? We are speaking here of the surgeons. How do these paediatric surgeons feel about the surgery? What are their emotions like at that point of time? How do they feel spending their entire day performing surgeries? Have you ever wondered about all these things? Probably not. But, if you have come down to this blog, it is definite that now you are compelled to think about it. So, let us take a look into the lives of paediatric surgeons.

Generally, the lives of surgeons start early. They begin their day by getting dressed up and all set to get their day working at the operation theatre. Imagine how it is to have to start a day by cutting and sewing body parts, with all the blood oozing out, and looking at the veins, muscles, and bones all dipped in blood! Moreover, when it is a paediatric surgeon, he has to be dealing with innocent children; so imagine his mindset! Obviously, they are trained to be stone-hearted and consider the patient they are operating on to be only a body, and not a human life, but after all, they are still a soul!

The job of a surgeon begins with doing a checkup for whether the child is eligible for the surgery or not. Once done, he has to be clear with the parents about everything regarding the surgery. Explaining all of that to them, doing the required tests, doing the paperwork, all of this comes under the job of a surgeon. Along with a list of surgeries he has to execute the entire day, he has many other things on his mind too. This include doing his regular rounds to keep a check on his patients, attending phone calls regarding other health issues of patients who aren’t around, reviewing the X-rays and other tests done of other patients, and much more. And, in the midst of this, if an emergency arises, he has to fit in the emergency into his already packed schedule, without bringing trouble onto the schedules of other patients and their surgeries. And, not to forget, while some surgeries are done in an hour or so, there are others that can go on long enough for 7-8 hours too! Amidst all of this, how do you think a surgeon has the time to have his own meals? And even if he does get the time, how would it feel to have his meals in between surgeries where all he is dealing with is flesh, bones, and blood! Finally, after all of this, at the end of the day, he has to write down notes on each of his patients, documenting his assessment and care plan.

There are certain surgeons who also move out of their hospital to help colleagues with certain assistance needed with an operation. This only adds to their long list of chores, with the added disadvantage of wasting their time in traffic. And then, when these surgeons are all done for the day, they may have to deal with another emergency call that may awaken them during the middle of the night. Without any excuses, these surgeons HAVE to take up the responsibility of reaching the hospital in time and getting the surgery done right away.

You can see how difficult the entire job is, for which a surgeon can't work all alone. He needs to be supported by a specially-trained staff like nurses, technicians, and anesthesiologists. Moreover, he has a very supporting family, especially the wife, who understand the job of the surgeon.
